J2ME Success

Posted February 27th, 2005 by Chris

I finally managed to get my first J2ME game up and running on my phone (Sony K700i). Although the top-down tank-rolling-around-screen test is not going to break any gaming charts just yet, it is a start and opens up a new avenue to explore for my project. Ideally I would like to build a J2ME multiplayer game (possibly over Bluetooth), and perhaps the tank

Refining Concept

Posted February 27th, 2005 by Chris

Today I finally allocated some time to refining the critical context for my negotiated project. My research has led me to the works of severasl artists, one of the most prominent being Heath Bunting. Two of Bunting’s projects - IDENTITYSWAPDATABASE and The Status Project - are key works of reference for my project, and further help to consolidate the position of Voogle as an exploration of identity commoditisation.

Game Idea

Posted February 18th, 2005 by Chris

Had a sudden flash of inspiration for a little 3d game that hopefully will fulfil the criteria for SOFT218’s assignment…”Create something that does something”.

Based on the classic pong, the game will present a cube which the user can rotate through any angle with the mouse. Only one side of the cube is filled, hence a bat. The ball must be bounced within the cube.

As the game goes on the, ball will increase in speed and the cube may shrink.

Anyway, the game will be based on my custom-written Java game engine that I am using for the Eden Project Game. However, as my plan is to implement 3D, I will probably start the engine from scratch to implement OpenGL.

Birth of Identity:Voogle

Posted February 13th, 2005 by Chris

OK, Voogle is a working title, and probably is a little too close for comfort to a certain well-known search engine. The beginnings of functionality are there though! It casts birth to various digital identities - some real, some generative - and creates live ‘bio-pages’ for them.Voogle takes names, creates online identities for them, and then uses stored names for a random process of digital birth to create new identities. These identities are built from Internet information and resources. Whether these identities have any real-world reference is unknown (such is the nature of the Net)… do they, therefore, have any relevance to the living world?
